Everything about Minecraft Bone block

Updated to 1.20

Bone blocks were added to the game many years ago with the 1.10 Minecraft Java patch. They are one of the white blocks available in Minecraft and they have a unique look, but they don’t have many uses other than being a decorative block. Today we are going to see how to find them, how to craft them and all their possible uses. Let’s start.

Where to find them

Bone blocks naturally generate in DesertSwamp and Soul Sand Valley biomes (the last one is in the Nether) as part of Fossils, which are structures made entirely of Bone blocks.

Here we can see 2 Fossils, one of them far away on the left

Keep in mind that you need to use a Pickaxe to break Bone blocks, otherwise they won’t drop anything.

You can also find Bone blocks as loot in Chests in Bastion Remnants, a structure that you can find in the Nether in the Nether Wastes, Soul Sand Valley, Crimson Forest and Warped Forest biomes.

If you can’t find any of these biomes, you can try to use the command /locate biome. For example, if you want to find the closest Desert, you just need to open the commands and type:

/locate biome minecraft:desert

And you’ll see a message appearing with the coordinates ot the closest Desert.

minecraft locate biome command

Fossil structures are very rare in the Overworld though, you will have more luck looking for them in the Nether, where they spawn more often.

How to craft them

Bone blocks come from Bone Meal, which is primarily used to make plants and vegetables grow faster. It can also be used to obtain White Dye.

If you want to know the uses of White Dye you can check the article All the White blocks in Minecraft.

Bone Meal is obtained from Bones, which you will mostly get from killing Skeletons:

You can craft Bone blocks by putting 9 Bone Meals in the Crafting Table.

How to make a large amount of Bone blocks

The most efficient way to gather a large quantity of Bone blocks is either a Skeleton Spawn farm or a Mob farm. The second one will take longer to make, but it is worth the extra time because it generates more loot. On top of that, to make a Skeleton Spawn farm you will first need to find a Skeleton Spawn, that can take up some time.

If you want to see how to build a Mob farm, you can follow the instructions in the video below.

How to get it – commands

To get Bone blocks by using commands, you will need to type the following line in the commands:

/give @p bone_block 1

If this line doesn’t work you can try with:

/give @p bone_block 1 0

Then a Bone block will appear in your inventory.

Uses

You can use Bone blocks as purely decorative blocks. Bone blocks show a different look on their top and bottom sides (but you can also place them horizontally to change the way they will look).

Other than their decorative uses, Bone blocks can be used to store huge quantities of Bone Meal (since 9 Bone Meals packed in one Bone block takes only 1 in the inventory, instead of 9).

Another interesting use of Bone blocks is when they are paired with Note blocks. If you place a Note block on top of a Bone block, the Note block will produce xylophone sounds!

Conclusions

That was everything worth saying about Bone blocks. Thay are used primarily as decorative blocks or to store huge amounts of Bone Meal. Crafting them is the easiest way to make them, since they are not easy to find as part of Fossils. Thank you very much for reading the article this far and I hope I’ll see you again around here. See you and take care!
