Elytras are not the only flight enabler in Minecraft. You can also fly with a Trident, and without having to consume Firework Rockets. Today we are here to see how to get a Trident, how to fly with a Trident and how to get the Riptide enchantment. Let’s start!
How to get a Trident
You can’t craft a Trident. You can only obtain it as loot when you kill a Drowned, that you can easily find underwater. You can also turn a Zombie into a Drowned by making them… drown in water (related topic: Can Zombies break Doors in Minecraft?)
Drowned have an 8.5% chance of dropping Tridents in Minecraft. Only Drowned holding a Trident will drop one in Minecraft Java edition. Since the chance of a Drown spawning with a Trident is only 6.25% in the Java edition, Tridents are particularly rare and valuable in this Minecraft edition.
When you get a Trident as loot, it usually have low durability and it will not last long. So you may want to check how to repair a Trident.
How to fly with a Trident
Trident enchantments are very interesting. You can enchant a Trident with the usual Curse of Vanishing, Mending and Unbreaking, which it shares with many other items, and Impaling which is a damage enchantment similar to Bane of Arthropods, Sharpness and Smite (see also Smite vs Sharpness in Minecraft: which one is better?).
Other than those “regular” enchantments, you can also enchant it with Loyalty and Channeling. Loyalty will make the Trident come back to you after every throw and Channeling will let you channel lightnings. Using those two enchantments will turn a Trident into something similar to the Mjölnir.
The last enchantment on the list is Riptide, which will make you toss in the same direction of the Trident when you throw it. And this is the enchantment that you need to fly with a Trident.
If you are swimming in water and you throw a Riptide enchanted Trident in the air, you will be able to fly in the facing direction. When it rains or it snows instead, you can use the Trident to fly wherever you are.
Few things to know:
- be careful because you can receive fall damage if you don’t land in water. It is a good idea to wear Feather Falling enchanted Boots when flying with a Trident
- if you want to be able to fly always, you just need to make it rain by using the command /weather.
To use commands you will need to have cheats allowed in your Minecraft world. If cheats are not allowed in your world, there is a workaround. You can check here how to still use cheats in that Minecraft world.
If cheats are allowed, to make it rain you can open the commands and type:
/weather rain

How to get the Riptide enchantment – commands
You can enchant a Trident with the Riptide enchantment using cheats. To do so, keep that Trident in your hand, open the commands and type:
/enchant @p riptide 3
If you want to enchant it with Riptide I or Riptide II, you just need to change the ‘3’ with ‘1’ or ‘2’.
Conclusions
You can fly with a Trident if you enchant it with Riptide. Once enchanted, throw it in the air while swimming in water and you will be tossed in the direction of the throw.
