How to make a Villager turn into a Farmer in Minecraft?

Minecraft Villagers can have many different professions. Each proffession can be useful for both the Village and the player, who can trade with them for different items. One of such professions is the Farmer.

You can turn a Villager into a Farmer by giving them a Composter as their profession block, other than a Bed (if they don’t already have one).

Today we will see how to craft a Composter, how to make a Villager turn into a Farmer and what you can trade with a Farmer. Let’s start!

Villagers profession blocks

A Villager’s profession depends on the profession block associated with that Villager. You will often see the profession block of a Villager inside their house.

The professions (and their respective profession blocks) are:

  • Armorer  Blast Furnace
  • Blacksmith – Grindstone
  • Butcher – Smoker
  • Cartographer – Cartography Table
  • Cleric – Brewing Stand
  • Farmer – Composter
  • Fisherman – Barrel
  • Fletcher – Fletching Table
  • Librarian – Lectern
  • Leatherworker – Cauldron
  • Masons – Stonecutter
  • Shepherd – Loom
  • Toolsmith – Smithing Table

How to craft a Composter

To craft a Composter you will need 6 Wooden Planks (of any type). Place them in a Crafting Table this way to obtain 12 Wooden Slabs:

Then, place 7 Wooden Slabs in the Crafting Table to obtain your Composter:

Other than turning a Villager into a Farmer, a Composter can produce a Bone Meal (related: Everything about Minecraft Bone block) by converting compostable items. If you feed one of these items (see here the complete list) to the Composter, this will help the Composter fill up. When it is full, you can right-click on it to receive Bone Meal.

How to make a Villager turn into a Farmer

If you want to turn a Villager into a Farmer, you first need to be sure that the Villager has their own Bed. If they don’t, craft one combining 3 Wooden Planks with 3 blocks of Wool (related article: All the white blocks in Minecraft):

Then place the Bed close to the Villager, maybe inside a little house that will help protecting the Villager from hostile mobs.

The next thing that you need to do is place the Composter next to the Villager, in their house or outside. The Villager will go to the Composter and then immediately turn into a Farmer.

Then you can start trading with them. See more in How to reset Villager trades in Minecraft? and How long does it take for Villagers to restock?.

What items does a Farmer trade?
