Minecraft Nether Wart: how to make it grow faster

Nether Wart is needed to brew any potion in Minecraft, and this makes it a very valuable item.

It takes approximately 34 minutes on average to fully grow, and the only way to make it grow faster is to change your game’s random tick speed. In fact, Nether Wart only needs to be placed on Soul Sand to grow, it doesn’t matter in which dimension it is planted, the presence of Water or Lava nearby or the light level.

Today we are here to see how you can get (and plant) Nether Wart, how to change the random tick speed and how to maximize your Nether Wart farm production. Let’s start!

how to make nether wart grow faster

How to get Nether Wart

If you want to get Nether Wart you will have to go to the Nether. Once there, you can find Nether Wart in either Nether Fortresses and Bastion Remnants (related: I can’t find any Nether fortress: what should I do?).

In Nether Fortresses you can find Nether Wart near the base of staircases.

In Bastion Remnants you can find it in the lower sections, usually surrounded by Lava and Blackstone.

Once you have Nether Wart, you can place it on top of Soul Sand to plant it. As said before, it doesn’t matter in which dimension it is planted, the presence of Water or Lava nearby or the light level. As long as it is placed on top of Soul Sand it will grow.

How to change the random tick speed

Nether Wart goes through 4 stages of growth. During the 2nd and 3rd stages it will look the same:

nether wart first stage
1
nether wart second and third stage
2/3
nether wart fourth stage
4

When it reaches the 4th stage, you can break it and it will drop from 2 to 4 Nether Wart.

The growth process can be sped up using the commands to change the random tick speed from 3 (the default random tick speed) to a higher value. Keep in mind that to do it you will need to use cheats. If cheats are not allowed in your world, there is a workaround. You can check here how to still use cheats in that Minecraft world.

For setting the speed to 1000, we’ll type:

/gamerule randomTickSpeed 1000

This will make the Nether Wart grow super fast. You can use this method for everything that uses random ticks, like growing crops or dripping Lava from Dripstones. Or you can also set the Random Tick Speed to 0 to make everything stop from growing (It is one of the 4 ways to freeze time in Minecraft).

How to maximize your Nether Wart farm

Unfortunately, it is not possible to build a completely automated Nether Wart farm. You could build an automatic Redstone harvester, that collects automatically the Nether Warth from your farm, but you will still have to plant it manually.

Planting the Nether Wart will be the longest part of the process. Instead of trying to harvest it more quickly, it is more efficient trying to get the most out of a smaller Nether Wart farm, that will also take less time to be replanted. To do so, you can use a Fortune enchanted tool.

The Fortune enchantment increases the amount of drops that you obtain when you break certain blocks. This means that if you break a Nether Wart with a Fortune enchanted tool, you will get up to 7 drops (depending on the enchantment’s level) instead of 4. To know more about the Fortune enchatment, you can check here.

Conclusions

Other than changing the random tick speed, there is no way to make Nether Wart grow faster. Light level, dimension, presence of water or Lava doesn’t change the growth speed. If you don’t want to use cheats, you can still get more Nether Wart by using a Fortune enchanted tool. Thank you very much for reading the article this far and I hope I’ll see you again around here. See you and take care!
