The Potion of the Turtle Master will make you feel as if you were a turtle. In fact, if you drink it you will become slower and tougher, just like those lovely reptiles (according to the Over the Edge movie). Today we are here to see what this potion does, the required materials, how to brew it and how to upgrade it. Let’s start!
What it does
The Potion of the Turtle Master comes either at level one or two. It lasts 20 seconds and gives the following effects:
- Potion of the Turtle Master: 60% slow and 60% damage reduction
- Potion of the Turtle Master II: 90% slow and 80% damage reduction
The damage protection will protect you against all types of damage but Starvation, Void and the /kill command, exactly like the Protection enchantment. Check the video below to see how resistant this potion will make you.
Required materials
To brew this potion you will need a Turtle Shell and an Awkward Potion. To brew an Awkward Potion you will need Nether Wart (related: Minecraft Nether Wart: how to make it grow faster).
You can use the following ingredients to then upgrade it (we will see how in the next section):
- Glowstone Dust: upgrades to Potion of the Turtle Master II
- Redstone Dust: upgrades to the same potion, but that lasts longer (40 seconds instead of 20)
- Gunpowder: upgrades to Splash Potion of the Turtle Master (the throwable version)
How to brew it
We already covered in details how to brew a Water Breathing Potion here. You can follow the same steps to brew a Potion of the Turtle Master: you will just need to use a Turtle Shell instead of a Pufferfish.

How to get it – commands
If instead you want to obtain this potion using commands, you will need to type:
/give @p potion{Potion:”minecraft:turtle_master”} 1
If instead you want to get an upgraded version of the potion, you will need to type:
- Splash version: /give @p splash_potion{Potion:”minecraft:turtle_master”} 1
- Longer version: /give @p potion{Potion:”minecraft:long_turtle_master”} 1
- Potion of the Turtle Master II: /give @p potion{Potion:”minecraft:strong_turtle_master”} 1
If you want to get more than one potion, you just need to change the 1 in the commands with the number of potions that you want.
Conclusions
The Potion of the Turtle Master is perfect for emergencies. A 60% or 80% damage reduction can really save your life in those situations where you are suffering from constant damage and you can’t do anything about it. For example if you are burning after swimming in Lava, or if you are suffering from Wither damage over time. It is not very reliable when you have to run away from enemies though.
