Uneasy Alliance is one of the hardest advancements in Minecraft. Bringing a Ghast to the Overworld is difficult and frustrating, but there are ways to make it easier. Today we are here to see what you have to do to complete this advancement, some useful tips, a general strategy to follow and an interesting shortcut that you could try to take. Let’s start!
How to complete Uneasy Alliance
If you press L (on Minecraft Java edition) the Advancements window will open. From there, you can see the Uneasy Alliance advancement (at the top of the Nether tab). Note: you will not see this advancement before going to the Nether.
If you hold your mouse on top of it, it will display the description:
“Rescue a Ghast from the Nether, bring it safely home to the Overworld… and then kill it.”
So that’s pretty easy to understand, to complete this advancement you will need to kill a Ghast while you are in the Overworld. Now, that’s easier said than done. In the next section we’ll discuss some useful tips to make this advancement a bit easier.
Tips
There are two important tips that you should follow:
- build a big Nether Portal
- use a Fishing Rod
A Ghast occupies a 4×4 space. This means that it would hardly fit through a basic 4×5 Nether Portal. To improve the chances that a Ghast flies through your Nether Portal you should try to build it as big as possible. The maximum Nether Portal size is 23×23, which would require at least 84 Obsidian blocks. You don’t need to build is this big, but remember that you could push it this far if needed.
If you use the Fishing Rod and hook a Ghast, you will be able to pull it. The ability to pull and maneuver a Ghast will make the advancement much easier (the video below is very old, but this mechanic didn’t change since then).
To craft a Fishing Rod you will need 3 Sticks and 2 Strings. You can get Strings as loot by killing Spiders. When you have all the ingredients, put them together in a Crafting Table:
Strategy
A general strategy that you can follow to pull this off is:
- go to the Nether
- look for a Ghast
- stay away from it (so that you can build in peace, without the Ghast attacking you)
- build a Nether Portal (as big as you have the patience for)
- go back to where you saw the Ghast
From here you will need to get the Ghast attention in order for it to follow you to the Nether Portal. Use the Fishing Rod to help bringing the Ghast where you want it to go, expecially when you want it to go through the portal.
Once you finally get it to the Overworld, follow it there and kill it. A Bow or a Crossbow are probably the best weapons for killing a Ghast (related: Bow vs Crossbow in Minecraft: which one is better?).
Shortcut
It is possible to complete this advancement without taking a Ghast in the Overworld: you would need to shoot an Arrow to a Ghast, then teleport to the Overworld before the Ghast dies. In fact, as long as you are in the Overworld while the Ghast dies, the advancement will complete.

It is important to note that to complete it this way you would need a perfect timing and this could actually make the advancement more difficult.
Useful commands
To make this challenge even easier, you could use some commands to get a lot of Obsidian and to get a Ghast Spawn Egg. This can help significantly since Gathering Obsidian is very boring and finding a Ghast could take a while.
So, to skip a very long and annoying mining process, you can open the commands and type:
/give @p minecraft:obsidian 84
84 is the amount of Obsidian that you will need to build a 23×23 portal (without the 4 corners), but you can also get whatever number you prefer.
Using a Ghast Spawn Egg could also be useful in case you can’t find a Ghast. So if you want to use one, open the commands and type:
/give @p minecraft:ghast_spawn_egg 1
To use a Spawn Egg you simply need to hold it in your hand and right-click on any block. If you do it, a Ghast will immediately appear.
Conclusions
This is one of the hardest advancements in Minecraft. It is very difficult to bring a Ghast to the Overworld, so remember to build a large Nether Portal and to use a Fishing Rod to make this advancement easier.
